Leisha Hailey Biography
Leisha Hailey was born in Okinawa, Japan and grew up in Bellevue, Nebraska. As a teenager in high school, she came out as lesbian. She attended Bellevue West High School, and then graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1991.
Hailey and her college friend, Heather Grody, formed the rock group "The Murmurs," which has been known as "Gush" since 2001, and performed in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and the East Village. Hailey and Grody moved to Los Angeles in the 1990s, where they recorded and released their first album. The duo later toured with Lilith Fair.
Hailey began acting in television commercials and working as an extra. She filmed several advertisements for Yoplait and was seen in the "coming out" episode of "Ellen" in 1997, starring real life lesbian Ellen DeGeneres. She then appeared in the 1997 film "All Over Me," and had roles in numerous lesser known films from 1998 to 2003.
In 2004, Hailey was cast in her claim-to-fame role playing Alice Pieszecki on the Showtime series "The L Word," which follows a group of lesbians who live in southern California. The show was a great success from the beginning and will air its fourth season in 2007.
When Hailey isn't performing with Grody in Gush or filming episodes for "The L Word," she has filled her time by appearing in a couple of guest roles on popular television shows. In 2006, Hailey was seen on "Grey's Anatomy" and "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."
