Cynthia Nixon Biography

Born and raised in Manhattan, Cynthia Nixon has been acting professionally since the age of 12 and continues to build upon a versatile career in film, television and on stage.

Nixon stars as Miranda Hobbes, the cynical corporate lawyer in HBO's Emmy®-and Golden Globe® award-winning series Sex and the City. Nixon received recognition for her role when she was nominated for three Golden Globes® and in 2002 she received her first Emmy® nomination. In 2002, Nixon along with her co-stars won a Screen Actor's Guild award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

The consummate New York actress, Nixon has the unique distinction of having appeared in two Broadway plays at the same time; at the age of 18 she played in both David Rabe's "Hurlyburly" and Tom Stoppard's "The Real Thing". Her list of Broadway theater credits also includes: "The Last Night of Ballyhoo", "Angels in America", "Indiscretions", for which she received a Tony nomination, "The Heidi Chronicles", and "Philadelphia Story" for which she received a Theater World Award.

Continuing to add to her interesting and intelligent repertoire of theater performances, Nixon recently returned to Broadway starring in the stage revival of the classic 1930's play by Clare Boothe Luce turned film, "The Women". The stage production was also filmed and aired on PBS. The Roundabout Theater's production, directed by Scott Elliot, also featured Kristen Johnston, Rue McClanahan, Mary Louise Wilson and Jennifer Tilly. Nixon played the central role of Mary Haines whose husband has an affair with a shop girl. For her role in "The Women", Ben Brantley of the New York Times wrote, "...in a superb performance ...Nixon finds layers of class-bred conflict and inhibitions in the play's noble heroine."

Nixon's active schedule also includes a role as founding member of the Drama Dept., an Off-Broadway theater company. Nixon's latest production includes her starring role as Soos in Douglas Carter Beane's "The Country Club". She has also appeared in five of the nine plays they have produced in the last four years. Her Off-Broadway and regional theater credits are numerous and impressive. She most recently starred in "String Fever" a quirky comedy about a woman in crisis at the Ensemble Studio Theatre. Typical would be her appearance in the role of Honey in Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf", in a production Albee directed himself which starred Glenda Jackson and John Lithgow, and for which she won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Award.

The actress made her film debut in "Little Darlings" in 1980, and has worked with some of the most prominent directors in film and theater, including Louis Malle, Milos Foreman, Mike Nichols and Robert Altman. She is featured in the films "Igby Goes Down", "Amadeus", "Prince of the City", "Baby's Day Out", "The Pelican Brief", "Marvin's Room", and "The Out-of-Towners".

On television, Nixon was seen in Wendy Wasserstein's "Kiss-Kiss, Dahlings!", "The Love She Sought" with Angela Lansbury, "Fifth of July", with Richard Thomas and Swoosie Kurtz, HBO's "Tanner 88", "The Murder of Mary Phagan" with Jack Lemmon and "Face of a Stranger" with Gena Rowlands and Tyne Daly. Nixon costarred with Scott Bakula and Eva Marie Saint in the touching family drama, "Papa's Angels", a CBS holiday special.

Nixon, a strong supporter, graduate, and concerned parent of New York City Public Schools, is actively working with the Alliance for Quality Education, a group that fights for funding and quality public education across the state. She is an important participant in strategic sessions as well as chief spokesperson for statewide events and national press coverage.

Offscreen, she is a dedicated mom who spends a lot of her time raising her two children she had with her ex-boyfriend Danny Mozes. Her daughter, Samantha, was born in November 1996 and her son, Charles Ezekiel, was born on December 16, 2002. Nixon currently resides in New York and is dating Christine Marinoni.
